What kinds of guitars should I look at?

I use a squire strat, and its time to move on. I know that certain guitars are better suited for certain types of playing : metal, rythm, country. Right now i am trying to play songs from Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica. I willing to invest around 500-600. I know there are hundreds of guitars. Just any directions would be helpful.

Are all the guitars for Guitar Hero 1, 2 and 3 compatible with each other?
